What uses do they have?

Stem cells are already used in routine treatments for a wide variety of medical concerns in humans including leukaemia, lymphomas, sports injury repair, wound healing, blood disorders, rhytid treatment (wrinkles) and corneal (eye) repair.

There are global projects investigating everything from degenerative diseases such as Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and heart disease, through to physically debilitating diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis and spinal cord injuries.

Investigation into various cancers, diabetes and HIV continues using stem cells as a major research tool.

Bone marrow contains blood stem cells and bone marrow transplantation to treat serious blood disorders such as leukaemia has been an example of a successful type of 'stem cell therapy'. Umbilical cord blood and cord tissue is another example of utilising a type of stem cell for therapy and is starting to be used in therapy for blood disorders and degenerative diseases.
